The Evolution of the Big Wheel

A lot of the concepts were considered too popular with mainstream customers at the beginning of this unique idea. Many people considered it absurd to put something that was as functionally and appealing on water as it was on land. One of the first prototype models featured two sails mounted on the steering wheel. There were many who were just as cranky as the idea of two large steering wheels on flat surfaces. So Mr. Fernandez and Mr. Taylor decided to take their concept one step further and incorporate a rudder into the design instead of two big steering wheels.
Originally, the wheels were intended be driven by regular bicycles, but they soon discovered that they could also use an ordinary bicycle chain as well. This allowed them to create smaller Big Wheel bicycles with the ability to be used by those who were not well-versed with riding motorcycles. The Big Wheel concept soon evolved into bikes that had sailing boats and steering. These models soon became known as "Quad bike" models. After a time, full suspension bikes were manufactured by companies with four real rudders, as well as an actual wheel that could be easily lifted.
In the beginning of the Big Wheel concept, a real wheel was attached to the rear of the bike. Later, the designers realized that this contraption could be a great addition to a racing yacht. The concept of having a "wheel on the boat", was quickly expanded upon by Mr. Taylor and Mr. Fernandez who decided to make a functioning Big Wheel. Using a heavy copper wire as the edge of the "wheel" as well as an assortment of servo motor wires the designers were finally able to create a working Big Wheel Bike. The wind-up mechanism allowed the rider the ability to steer the bike through the water.
The first Big Wheel bikes that were ever built were very primitive in design. They featured huge round wheels which the rider was required to push by dragging their body weight. After some tweaks engineers were able to improve the design of these units to provide the same type of steering offered by the popular racing yacht rowing machines. The trike was named the "Quatra" after the improvement. The improved version was called the "Gyro-Quatra" which meant that there were two real rudders on either side of the cockpit instead of just one.
The upgraded Big Wheel models were mounted on the frame of a regular bike and fitted with a front derailleur. The Big Wheel was a total transformation from a sailing boat into a full-sized road bike. The Big Wheel was adopted by companies such as Honda Boulle, Honda and Fox. It was later renamed the 'Honda Cart' and the 'BSC touring bicycle'. These bikes were later adopted by big race teams and were also used in a few Tours de France. The popularity of the Big Wheel however, never completely waned, and even to this times, they're being used by a lot of professional cyclists.
